Brush Collection & Chipping

Fire Retardant Treatment Project

Performed under a grant from the CCI administered by CalFire. During two separate years, treatments using two different fire retardant products were applied in June to a one mile portion of a public roadside that had been the site of at least two suspicious fire starts. The site was monitored each month until the rains came in the fall to look for evidence of attempted fire starts and to collect and count discarded items that had a potential to start a fire in untreated, dry vegetation. Cigarette butts were collected by the hundreds over that period in addition to numerous glass bottles. The area did not experience any fire during those two years.
Community Wildfire Protection Plan

The Southwest Community Wildfire Protection Plan was collaboratively developed in 2012 through the combined efforts of the South West Riverside County communities and the South West Riverside County Fire Safe Council. It identifies and prioritizes areas for hazardous fuel reduction treatments and recommends the types and methods that will protect those communities. This plan also addresses wildfire preparedness and evacuation issues relative to wildfire threat. The plan was produced in close cooperation with local community representatives, federal, state and local fire authorities and US Forest Service/USDA agencies, Riverside County’s Emergency
Management Department, local Resource Conservation District, utility companies and transportation agencies. This plan addresses such issues as potential wildfire response, hazardous fuel mitigation, community preparedness and structure protection. Because of changing demographics over the years, these CWPPs should be updated every 10 years. This one is in the process of this updating effort.
